The Minnesota Association for Korean Americans (MAKA) is pleased to announce the availability of a select number of scholarships for Minnesota high school seniors of Korean descent who are planning to further their education at the college level.
The aim of these scholarships is to boost the self-confidence of students with Korean roots and motivate them to pursue a college education. We welcome all eligible individuals to apply.
The Committee will evaluate the application materials provided by each student and grant a one-time $1500 Scholarship. An additional $500 will be awarded to the top applicant, whether they are an athlete, artist, STEM scholar, or exceptional essay writer, if applicable.
Eligibility criteria for 2025/2026 scholarships
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Must be a Minnesota High School Senior in the 2025-2026 academic year
- Must have Korean ancestry (at least 25% biologically Korean)
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Must be able to attend the awards ceremony (Celebrating Tomorrow) in Spring 2026
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applications should include:
- Completed application form & applicant's photograph. (JPEG format is preferred.)
- Official high school transcript for the last two academic years. (A scanned image or photo is acceptable; it does not need to be a sealed copy from a third party.)
- (Optional) PSAT/SAT or ACT scores (PDF format)
- Scholarship essay. Select one of the topics and write an essay of 400-650 words.
- Topic 1: "Discuss a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it impact you, and what lessons did you learn from the experience?"
- Topic 2: "What does being a Korean American in Minnesota mean to you?"
- Application-related materials will not be returned.
- If you wish to be considered as a top student, please include your test scores (ACT/SAT/AP).
- If you wish to be considered as a top athlete, please provide detailed information about your honors/awards.
- Essays generated by AI will result in disqualification from the MAKA Scholarship.
Application Process
- The application period for the 2025/2026 scholarships begins on August 13, 2025. Applicants can apply through one of the following methods:

- Mail: MAKA, P.O. Box 390553, Edina, MN 55439
- All application materials must be received by 11:59 pm CDT on September 30, 2025. Changes to applications will not be permitted after the application deadline.
- Successful applicants will be notified on October 15, 2025. MAKA plans to award between 10-15 scholarships this year.
- The evaluation criteria are as follows: 1/3 essay, 1/3 awards/honors, 1/3 extracurricular activities. All applications will be reviewed and discussed by the MAKA Scholarship Committee. The Committee's decisions are final.
