Background (History of the Award)

**Purpose and origin:** The Advocates Scholarship was created by The Advocates Law Firm to reduce the financial barriers of higher education and to support lifelong learning in the communities the firm serves. The scholarship reflects the firm’s commitment to education, community safety, and civic awareness. It is awarded on a continuing, biannual basis to students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities. The program emphasizes practical civic topics—this cycle’s prompt focuses on bicyclist safety and public awareness.

- Founded by The Advocates Law Firm to support higher-education access
- Ongoing, biannual scholarship program
- Emphasis on community-oriented essay topics

Description

**What the scholarship funds:** The Advocates Scholarship awards a monetary prize to students who submit a focused, research-based essay on bicyclist safety and awareness. The required essay asks applicants to identify daily problems bicyclists face, evaluate public and legal awareness of bicyclists, and propose ways to improve awareness and road safety. Essays should be well-researched and reflect thoughtful, actionable ideas that connect civic responsibility to road-safety outcomes. This award is intended to promote dialogue and practical solutions that benefit both students and the broader community.

- Essay topic: bicyclist daily problems, legal/public awareness, and solutions
- Focus on research-backed, actionable recommendations
- Aimed at community impact and student engagement

Eligibility

**Who may apply:** Any prospective or current student enrolled at an accredited college or university within the United States is eligible to apply. International students studying at accredited U.S. institutions are covered only if their school is accredited and located in the United States. Meeting eligibility is a prerequisite for consideration; incomplete or unverifiable enrollment information will disqualify an application.
