Description
The Irene Adler Prize is an annual essay scholarship created to support women studying journalism, creative writing, or literature. It’s an international, free-entry competition that awards a primary scholarship and optional honorable mentions based on a submitted 500-word essay. The prize was established to recognize and amplify the contributions of women in writing and media and to provide practical help for educational costs.

- Annual international essay competition for women studying writing-related fields
- Single primary scholarship plus up to two honorable mentions
- 500-word English essay required as the main entry component

History of the Award
The prize was founded out of gratitude for the women who shaped the founder’s career—editors, teachers, family members—and as an effort to give back to the next generation. It was designed to acknowledge the disproportionate obstacles women still face and to help maximize female talent in media and literature. The award is named the Irene Adler Prize and is administered publicly through the organizer’s channels.

- Created to give back to women who influenced the founder’s career
- Intended to support and elevate emerging women writers
- Publicly administered and named the Irene Adler Prize

Eligibility
Only women are eligible to enter, and the competition welcomes applicants from any country. Entrants must be commencing or continuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. in journalism, creative writing, or literature at a recognized post-secondary institution for the 2026–27 academic year. There is no age restriction, and past $1,000 scholarship winners are not eligible to re-compete; previous honorable-mention recipients may enter again.

- Open to women worldwide enrolled (or starting) in 2026–27 in specified degree programs
- No age limit
- Past $1,000 winners ineligible; past honorable-mention recipients remain eligible

Award Value
The primary Irene Adler Prize scholarship is US$1,000. In addition, up to two honorable mentions of US$250 each may be awarded at the judge’s discretion. The award is a one-time payment per primary winner.
